Theo story of deceased New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez continues to get sadder as his family shares more insight into the football player who committed suicide in prison in 2017. With the release and success of the Netflix documentary “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez,” his older brother Jonathan Hernandez has been doing the rounds and discussing his brother’s legacy.
The elder Hernandez appeared on The Dr. Oz Show in his first interview since the Netflix documentary was released. He spoke with Dr. Oz, telling him that he believes his mother and brother finally had a discussion about Aaron’s sexuality – through the plexi-glass window of a prison visiting center.
“He’s like, ‘Mom, you’re going die never knowing your son.’” During the interview, Hernandez himself still seemed to be processing his feelings about the totality of the situation. “Then all of a sudden they have this conversation, and they’re both flooded with tears across from each other,” Jonathan said.
The story took another dark turn which revealed the depths of abuse that the star football player and his siblings faced growing up with their father who abused them – leading many to believe that Aaron’s parents had an immeasurably negative effect upon him.
Dr. Oz asked Jonathan if he believed that their father would have been able to confide in their now-deceased father, Dennis Hernandez – to which Jonathan replied “I can’t imagine him even being able to,” said, adding, “My dad would have thought he could beat that out of him.” In a 2018 interview, Jonathan told PEOPLE that the athlete suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse before devolving into a life of violence.
Aaron Hernandez’s fiancée at the time, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, has also come out and spoken about her lost love’s sexuality. She appeared on Good Morning America, telling them that questions about her betrothed’s sexuality should have been left on the cutting floor of the documentary. “You can’t describe someone’s sexuality without them being here,” she said. “Although I have had a child with Aaron, I still can’t tell you what he was feeling inside, no one can.”
Hernandez was arrested in 2013 for the murder of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancée Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez‘s sister. As he awaited trial, he was charged with the fatal drive-by shootings of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado.
