Actor Tyrese Gibson has been one of the stalwart faces of the Fast & Furious franchise since it began and will continue with Fast & Furious 9, set to be released in 2021. The singer has also become known for his social media antics, which spilled over into his custody battle over his eldest daughter – who he still cannot post on social media.
Tyrese has been locked into a custody battle for his eldest daughter since he divorced his wife Norma Mitchell Gibson. The two have been locked in a legal battle for over daughter Shayla since 2009. Mitchell is a British citizen and the two married in 2007 but their marriage didn’t last long, and the divorce has been messy.
As recently as last year, Tyrese was in the courts attempting to re-litigate the terms of their custody agreement, which is supposed to be 50/50. Tyrese seems intent on having the courts hold ex-wife Norma to every detail of their agreement, while Norma told MadamNoire back in 2015 that she won’t be silent any longer and has been dealing with Gibson for a long time.
“I just have come to a point where I felt that I really want to have a voice and speak up for myself. It’s been a long time that I have been going through this and I just want to move on and move forward.”
Tyrese seems to want to move forward but only if that results in him getting primary custody of the now 13-year-old teenager. TMZ discovered that in January of 2019, he filed papers with the courts to have Norma explain why she left the country – and Shayla with a friend, instead of her father, as he’s supposed to have the right of first refusal in those situations.
He also at the time, dug up some old social media posts from 2017 that featured Shayla, which he stated that Norma knew was a violation of their previous court order that has been in place since 2014. Ultimately, the judge sided with Tyrese though the outcome is still unclear with regards to that.
However, it shows that in their ongoing custody battle for Tyrese’s eldest daughter that Tyrese intends to play by the rules – even if those rules are a bit tedious. In any legal battle or custody battle, every little thing and any little thing can matter or make a difference.
Norma has a few things up her sleeve when it concerns Tyrese and social media, too. In a clip from The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, Tyrese told the radio host and his listeners that he married Mitchell while she was pregnant so that he wouldn’t have to visit the UK to see his child.
Let’s hope that Tyrese’s eldest daughter doesn’t see her father making statements like that about her mother and doesn’t let the custody and legal battles shape her future relationship with her father.
Posting a cute video of his youngest daughter, Tyrese can be seen high-fiving the little girl and pushing her around the grounds. However, when a commenter mentions missing seeing Tyrese’s eldest daughter, he reminds them of the reason why they aren’t.
Referencing his custody battle, Tyrese told the follower “I can’t post my 13 year old I have a court order in place.” See the post below.
