Niecy Nash shocked the world last year when the 51-year-old got married to musician Jessica Betts. The actress was widely known to have been married to men before. Her marriage to Betts comes months after her divorce from Jay Tucker after 8 years of marriage. Nash is now opening up more about her union.
The Claws actress had a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where she discussed falling in love with Betts. Nash explained that the two had been friends for over four years before ever crossing intimate lines. She then shares the name that she affectionately refers to her partner. “You called her my wife. I lovingly call her my ‘hersband,'” Nash gushes to DeGeneres. The actress, however, refers to herself as Betts’ wife.
She jokingly acknowledges that she “broke the internet” with the announcement of their 2020 wedding. “I was already divorced and we were still friends, and we went to go eat crabs.” Nash then jokes, “It’s a gateway, people! If you don’t want this life, don’t go eat crabs.”
Previously the actress addressed her sexuality to PEOPLE, who said her marriage had zero to do with “gender” and everything to do with “soul”. “She is the most beautiful soul I have ever met in my life,” said Niecy.
“I was not suppressing my sexuality my whole life,” she added. “I love who I love. At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I’ve done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way. So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I’ve always been. It’s a matter of who I am in this moment.”
After the talk show host reminds Nash of her comments, further explains that she does not view it as a “coming out”. “A lot of people say that, like, ‘Oh, you came out!’ and I say, ‘Well, from out of where?’ You know what I mean?” she stated. “I wasn’t anywhere to come out of.”
She continued, “Some people are like, ‘I don’t get it.’ My daughter, the youngest one, she made me sit down and watch a program. She said, ‘Mom, you gotta know how you identify.’ I said, ‘Oh, I do?’ So we watched this whole thing … and there was a thousand different things you could’ve called yourself. When I got through watching it she was like, ‘Well, what are you?’ I go, ‘Confused. I’m more confused than ever!'”
Niecy Nash is reportedly working on an upcoming talk show.
