In a move that shocked her fans, Niecy Nash revealed to the world that she had gotten married to a woman named Jessica Betts, in a very private and exclusive ceremony. While many of her fans were both surprised and elated for her, Nash is claiming that she hasn’t “come out” of anything, much less a closet.
It wasn’t long ago that Nash’s divorce from her 2nd husband Jay Tucker was finalized. The pair had been married for 8 years, seeing Nash through one of the most successful career stints she’s had. The Claws star previously shared the news of her split in October of last year, with it becoming finalized just this past March.
Nash previously said the two had reached a mutual decision. “We believe in the beauty of truth,” the statement said. “Always have. Our truth is that in this season of our lives, we are better friends than partners in marriage. Our union was such a gorgeous ride. And as we go our separate ways now, we feel fortunate for the love we share – present tense. Thank you all out there for your support of us as a couple over the last eight years. We are grateful.”
With that out of the way, it seems as if new wife Jessica Betts and Nash had been friends for years before even realizing that there may be a different type of relationship in their future. Now that the announcement has blown over and the parties have ended, the new Mrs. Betts sat down with People to talk about her new love and why she feels she was never “hiding” anything.
“I was not suppressing my sexuality my whole life. I love who I love. At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I’ve done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way.”
There was a bit of a shockwave that came with her announcement, simply because many never knew that the actress identified as queer and had only been married to men at that point. According to Nash however, her latest marriage has nothing to do with any of the normal “norms.”
“[My marriage] has absolutely nothing to do with gender and it has everything to do with her soul. She is the most beautiful soul I have ever met in my life.”
Nash believes that her current choices come as a result of who she is right now. “So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I’ve always been. It’s a matter of who I am in this moment.”
With fan remarks about her using her marriage to “come out of the closet,” Nash strongly disagrees and makes the announcement more about the internal than the external. “I don’t feel like my marriage is my coming out of anywhere, but rather a going into myself and being honest about who I love,” she shares. “And I’m not limiting myself on what that love is supposed to look like.”
