Niecy Nash is in love and does not care what you or anyone thinks about it. She has proclaimed her love for her wife, Jessica Betts, which she has admitted to be “something new” for her as she’s been married to men twice before. The actress, who has had an illustrious and award-winning career with no plans of stopping, is making it plain that nothing will stop her from her happiness. Not even the threat of losing her loyal fanbase.
The Internet was literally stopped in its tracks when a picture was casually placed on Nash’s Instagram account on August 31, 2020 announcing that she was ‘Mrs. Carol Denise Betts.” The photo showed a joyous Nash along with her wife, singer Jessica Betts, on their wedding day. A similar showing of the happy couple also appeared on Betts’s Instagram account.
Niecy Nash and Jessica Betts met on social media while she was still married to her now ex-husband, Jay Tucker. At the time they were only friends, as she “never saw her as someone I could date,” according to PEOPLE.
The When They See Us actress also spoke to the magazine about her marriage and being the new Mrs. Betts, claiming that it was Jessica’s “beautiful soul” and not gender that attracted her. “I was not suppressing my sexuality my whole life,” the actress expressed. “I love who I love. At one point in my life, I married twice and I love those people. And today I love this person. I’ve done everything I wanted to do on my own terms and my own way. So my choice now in a partner has nothing to do with who I’ve always been. It’s a matter of who I am in this moment.”
Nash continued, “I loved her before I was in love with her because she is such a special human being. But we began to see each other in a way we never had before. Sometimes you get so broken by love, you run from it. But I’ve learned that you should always hold space for magic because it can happen at any time.”
Betts, whom the actress refers to as her “hersband” has undoubtedly stolen Nash’s heart. While appearing on comedian Ellen DeGeneres’s daytime talk show, Nash further detailed that her “coming out” was not based on living a “sexually repressed life” while being married to her previous husbands or in her past relationships with men. ” I just loved them when I loved them. And now I love her,” said Nash to the host.
Soon enough, Nash would become somewhat of a staple and new icon in the LGBTQ+ community. Nash shared with Distractify in an exclusive interview that she never expected her marriage to Betts would be such a big deal. “We have received just an overwhelming amount of love,” shared Nash. “And I get messages all the time talking about how our relationship and how our love has inspired someone else so I’m happy about that. Now, I literally had no idea that this part of my life was going to affect so many people that I did not know.”
Nash may have received an overwhelming amount of love and support, but there are some folks who apparently are not too crazy about her new choice of love. One such particular fan commented under a photo the actress posted of the couple sharing a sweet intimate moment, asking if she was worried about the amount of “loyal fans” that she had lost ever since her announcement.
Nash generously offered a response to shut both the fan down and all those who feel the same. “If I lost a fan because of who I love then that wasn’t a real fan,” she said. “Who/how I love has nothing to do with my art. I’m still a skilled, Emmy nominated, award winning actress. I didn’t stop being great at my craft because of where I lay my head.”
She continued, “Soooo idk? All I know is I’m happy and my projects are lit. can’t wait for those who never stopped riding to see! Matter of fact the haters can stay tuned as well.” Nash concluded with the hashtag “happily married”.
