Actress Niecy Nash may be on to a new chapter in her life with her wife, Jessica Betts, but that does not mean she does not care about some aspects of her past. The Claws actress and Jay Tucker, an electrical engineer, have ended their eight-year marriage and decided that it is best that they live life separately. Whomever Tucker decides to enter into a relationship with next may still have to go through Niecy, however!
Niecy Nash and Jay Tucker shared a spark that would leave a mark on the actress. The couple seemed inseparable, as the actress would lovingly sing his praises often. “My Mr. Wonderful is here because he’s comfortable in his skin, he is warm, so loving, and sexy,” she once told OK! Magazine in 2010. “He’s good to me, he’s good to my children, my family. He’s supportive, he’s loving. I wouldn’t trade in this one.”
In the same interview, Nash shared that Tucker was consistently romantic and would go the extra mile to make sure that not only she, but her family would feel the love at all times. Tucker was known to often rub Nash’s feet after her performances while being a contestant on Dancing With The Stars. “Romance isn’t always in the big things because he does that,” explained Nash. “He comes to my house and brings flowers for me for Valentine’s Day, flowers for my daughter, my mom and all those sorts of sweet things.”
She added, “What’s romantic is we’re in New York right now, and he could be anywhere, He could be with his friends, he could be with his family, he could be out shopping, but he’s here with me, making sure I know my talking points, making sure I eat and have what I need, making phone calls back to L.A. on my behalf. That’s romantic. Taking care of me is romance.”
In September of 2010, Jay Tucker asked for Nash’s hand in marriage. The When They See Us actress had previously been married to an ordained minister, Don Nash, for 13 years. The marriage brought forth three children. Her marriage to Tucker would be her second.
“I cannot believe that God has been this kind that he would gift me this man,” she said to OK!, “Falling in love was the easy part, planning a wedding — yikes!”
At the time Nash was excited as the actress felt she had manifested him into her life because of a promise she made to herself after the failure of her first marriage. “I have to say, this second time around, it feels custom,” she said. “Even after I got my divorce, the ink wasn’t even dry on the paper, and I said, ‘Ooh, the next time I become a wife, I got this thing down pat!’ I always believed that there was someone built for me.”
The couple married on May 28, 2011, in Malibu at the Church Estate Vineyard as TLC cameras filmed the preparations for their big day for a reality show. But sadly, the news would shock the public when it was announced that the couple decided to end their marriage.
TMZ reported that the couple separated on June 1, 2019. It was not until October that the public was alerted of the couple’s decision to call it quits via a joint statement posted to Nash’s Instagram account.
“We believe in the beauty of truth. Always have,” the statement read. “Our truth is that in this season of our lives, we are better friends than partners in marriage. Our union was such a gorgeous ride. And as we go our separate ways now, we feel fortunate for the love we share – present tense. “
For most who go through divorces, the process can be extremely nasty and tumultuous. For Niecy and Tucker, she claimed that would not be the case due to the nature of their relationship.
“For us, it’s easy, because we love each other,” the actress explained while at the 2019 Glamour Women of the Year Awards. “The love has just taken on a different form, but [he’s] always gonna be my friend. Always.” At the time, Nash smiled and shared that she was”just over here drinking my water and healing. I ain’t ready to put all this back on the block. It’s too much too soon.”
But as for Tucker, although at the time she claimed he was not dating, if and when he is ready to move on he will have to go through Nash first – at least according to her. “I would have to interview any girl who’s gonna be on his block,” Nash declares. “I gotta make sure he’s taken care of.”
Good to know there’s still love there, which may very well be the case as Nash previously stated that she believes exes can very much work together.
“I say so. I think exes can [work together], but I mean, you got to have the temperament for it,” she shared. “And if you’re in a new relationship, you just got to hope that those people are not you know, leery, that that spark may come back. The chemistry might come on back.”
