Angela Bassett is an exceptional actress, and she is well aware of it. Despite portraying some of the most iconic women in history on our screens, she has never gotten proper recognition from organizations like The Academy Awards. While she gears up for this year’s ceremony, fans continue to revisit her past work, and everyone agrees that she deserved an Oscar for What’s Love Got to do With It. So does Bassett.
This year’s Oscar nominations were announced earlier today, and Angela is set to go head to head with the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu for Best Supporting Actress. This is in connection to her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She already took home a Golden Globe for the film at this year’s ceremony. Fans hoping this will be the year she gets her Oscar will remember she was in a similar position in 1993. Despite taking home a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Tina Tuner, she would not get her Oscar that year.
Many fans have been upset since believing she was robbed. Just last year a meme circulated showcasing all of her roles, including Betty Shabazz, Coretta Scott, Tina Turner, Rosa Parks, Voletta Wallace, and of course, Queen of Wakanda. It read, “ya’ll still ain’t gave Auntie no Oscar?” Snoop Dogg reposted it, wondering the same thing.

While seated next to Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, a fan called in to ask Angela if she ever felt robbed of an award show win. Angela laughed before composing herself and answering, “uh huh!” Jennifer let out a huge applause.
Andy asked straight up if it was for the Tina Turner biopic. “Yeah, absolutely!” That year she was beaten out by Holly Hunter, who won for the film The Piano. While she tried to maintain her grace, Angela couldn’t help but let out that Holly was “playing a mute” to much laughter. “I mean, she was fine. She was fabulous.”
Angela says that she put a lot of work into playing Tina, and it “called on a lot” to pull it off. Fingers crossed she wins this year.
