There are few relationships that seemed to be under wraps longer than Ashanti and Nelly’s decade long partnership. When the two were together, they were both having great success in their careers until it all came crashing down. In a resurfaced clip, the singer shared why the two unfortunately don’t chat any longer.
Since she burst onto the scene in 2002, Ashanti’s been laying claim to records in the music industry and beyond. When her self-titled debut album dropped, it sold 503,000 copies — one the biggest first-week sales for a debut female artist up until then. The album topped the Billboard 200 AND the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart when it debuted, eventually winning Ashanti a Grammy award and cementing her place in the music business.
It’s this achievement that Ashanti recently reminded her fans of on Instagram in a post where she celebrated her 18 years in the industry, her relevance and her good business acumen.
She wrote in the post, “Celebrating 18 years of my debut Album.. Its so crazy that I have so many requests… more from rappers than anyone from this new generation to sample these songs… it’s an incredible feeling that 18 years later this album still slaps… still touches people young & old. Super grateful. Thank you guys so much for all your love and continued support. I couldn’t do it with out you!”
With her debut album, Ashanti, first-week sales were so legendary that she broke (and apparently still holds) the record for “sales of a debut album by a female artist,” which she reminded her fans. “Still in the Guinness book of world records for the fastest selling R&B debut female artist in music history.”
While Ashanti’s still been around, so has Nelly, who is currently participating in the current cast of the hit show Dancing with the Stars. In its 29th season, the franchise saw such celebrities as Carole Baskin from Netflix’s Tiger King join the cast alongside others like Nelly and Backstreet Boy AJ McLean.
Nelly also took part in a Verzuz battle, which saw him going against fellow rapper/actor Ludacris. The two have considerable heft to their catalogs but at the end of the day, Nelly’s success hasn’t been small by any means. According to Verzuz, Nelly has sold more albums, songs and has more streams than Ludacris.
Even with all their success, both while they were together and apart, it seems that Nelly and Ashanti have had no reason to be in communication with each other, which saddens many fans. In a resurfaced clip, Ashanti shared why with What What Happens Live’s Andy Cohen.
When a fan asked if the two were cordial and their relationship is good, Ashanti said she hadn’t seen or talked to him since then, almost 7 years later after the fact. “You know what? I honestly haven’t seen him since we broke up, which is crazy,” she said.
In 2013, she told radio host Ebro on his show Ebro in the Morning exactly why she wouldn’t be getting back with the “Ride Wit’ Me” rapper.
“I kinda just…I have to do me. We’re in that space right now and there are things that were said and things that were done that probably shouldn’t have been said or done, but they have been.”
