The Internet likes to poke a fight out of nowhere these days and it seems even the famously zen-like August Alsina gets egged on while just minding his business. While the positive singer regularly encourages taking care of your mental health, he stopped his own life for a second to put down a fan who called him “irrelevant.”
Alsina, of course, shot back into the public consciousness after a now-infamous interview with radio host Angela Yee, in which he revealed that he’d had a relationship with Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in the past.
The interview was held alongside the release of Alsina’s latest project, The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy, which was released June 26th, 2020 on Shake the World/EMPIRE. Alsina had taken a bit of a sabbatical from the music scene, his last release dropping in 2015. In the time between, he’s dealt with a ton of personal issues, including battling his own addictions and the loss of his father, brother and sister-in-law.
“Contrary to what some people may believe, I’m not a troublemaker,” the singer said at the time. “I don’t like drama. Drama actually makes me nauseous. I also don’t think that it’s ever important for people to know what I do, who I sleep with, who I date, right?”
In another recent interview with People magazine, Alsina talked about working to be an example for his “naughters,” as he affectionately calls them. Alsina’s the legal guardian of his nieces Chaylin, 14, Amaiya, 13, and Kayden, 11, after their mother Chandra — who had been engaged to his late brother Melvin.
“I’m striving to be an example for my ‘naughters,'” he told the publication. “And I want them to know and trust that they’re going to be alright here with or without me, or without any man, without any woman, without any parent.”
“I never really cared about what people thought of me, but my personal life started to seep into my business life,” said Alsina of the incident with the Smiths. “There were certain falsities about me, and it affected my business relationships. I got three kids to look after. Kill me, hate me, stone me, but bury me an honest man.”
Alsina has been quiet on social media after releasing a few singles from The Product III. He decided to address a fan who attacked his perceived “irrelevancy” now that the whole thing had blown over.
“August Alsina did allat just to be irrelevant again,” said a tweet that started to gain traction on social media. Alsina took to his own Instagram to address the fact that if he’s so irrelevant, why bother making the post, and even addressed “relevancy” as a type of social currency that isn’t good for one’s mental health.
“I want to say this to the young world; look, don’t feel pressured to constantly be on the internet, or whatever. When you feel like you need to take a break, for whatever reason it may be– your spiritual maintenance, mental health, whatever it is– do that shit, man.” He then continued, “It’s weird ‘cause it’s kind of an oxymoron, ‘cause I’m irrelevant, yet…still in your mouth. Make that make sense.”
