It’s been at least 5 years since Big Sean’s mega-hit “IDFWU” was released, and even longer since the relationship the song is about ended. It was widely known at the time of the song’s release that it was about Sean’s relationship with ex-fiancee Naya Rivera, and with her passing, fans have turned on Sean’s song – and him – while they grieve her loss.
Naya Rivera was just one of the high-profile relationships that rapper Big Sean has been a part of. It’s widely known that Big Sean got into a relationship with singer Ariana Grande while with Naya Rivera. Rivera even wrote about it in her 2016 book Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up.
One particular passage was about her Glee co-star Cory Monteith. Monteith, who played Finn Hudson on the show, passed in 2013. Monteith, in addition to playing Lea Michele’s boyfriend on screen, he was also in an off-screen relationship with Michele.
In her book, Naya also shared a story about her relationship with Big Sean, causing many fans to find his past behavior problematic.
“I started to realize that I was dating an incredibly selfish person. I shook Sean awake and told him that Cory had just [passed]. He just said, “Oh man, babe, I’m really sorry about that,” and rolled over and went back to sleep. I was crying and kept coming in and out of the room as I went out into the hallway to make phone calls, and he never got out of bed or even so much as sat up and turned on the light. This still blows my mind to this day.”
She also talked about how the revelation of Sean being selfish also lead to her finding out about his relationship with Ariana Grande, inadvertently. After they got engaged, she said that Sean started to avoid her. She then said she went over to his house and found someone else there.
“Guess what little girl is sitting cross-legged on the couch listening to music? C’mon, people, I’m not going to tell you, but you can guess because it’s not that hard! (It rhymes with “Smariana Schmande,” if you’re really having a hard time.)”
After their break, Naya Rivera ended up getting married to the father of her child, Ryan Dorsey. Even though their relationship didn’t last, it was her getting married to Dorsey that lead to Sean releasing “IDFWU” – on her wedding day to Dorsey.
Though the pair haven’t been together for years, fans are now asking Sean to take down the song on streaming services out of respect for Rivera’s death. While some are being respectful, others are being a bit more direct with their feelings about Sean’s song in retrospect.

There’s been no statement from Big Sean on the issue as of yet. See some of the opinions of fans below.
