Comedian Bill Cosby’s chosen way of keeping himself occupied while incarcerated continues to have repercussions outside of the cell that he sits in. Continuing a trend that he started on his own, Cosby has turned into social media Santa Claus and handed out another round of “thanks” to more curious personalities. Merry Christmas?
Calling it “Thank You Thursday,” Cosby started a hashtag and tradition on his social media channels of handing out various “thank you” notes to people whom he deems deserves them. While there’s been no real explanation on how Cosby comes up with his choices weekly, one gathers from them that Cosby is more tapped into pop culture than ever before while incarcerated.
The first person Cosby thanked was rapper Boosie, two months after his tweet in support of Cosby. It’s curious that a man who made respectability politics the norm for Black people would choose a rapper like Boosie – but not when you scan back through Boosie’s timeline. Turns out he supports Cosby and even advocated for his release at one point.
Free Bill Cosby Let’s Start A Petition
— Boosie BadAzz (@BOOSIEOFFICIAL) September 2, 2020
In September 2020, Boosie went viral for proposing creating a petition to “Free Bill Cosby” from his current sentence. The tweet got over 3,000 likes and almost 3,000 retweets. Boosie may have thought it was a great idea, but many thought it was also insensitive. Cosby’s charges went through the legal system and his survivors have gone through an ordeal. Still, it seems as if Cosby did indeed get the word of his support.
“On this 10th day of December 2020…I will pay homage to those who have supported me and my family, simply by saying, thank you. The first person to be recognized on Thank You Thursday is Rapper @BOOSIEOFFICIAL,” Cosby’s launch tweet read.
“Thank you for your support & I’m praying for you to have a speedy recovery and for your mobility to be restored. Again, thank you very much. #ThankYouThursday #ThankYouBoosie #GetHealthyBoosie.”
Cosby has also initiated other theme days on his channels with other similarly titled themes. It’s a wonder if he’s running the page himself or if he has a team doing it. The theme names are very tongue in cheek and give different days different meanings. Other days include Monday Memory, Tasty Tuesday, Rerun Wednesday, Thank You Thursday, Flashback Friday, Shonuff Saturday, and Sunday Funnies.
For his recent Thank You Thursday, which happened to fall on Christmas Eve, Cosby thanked a trio of celebrities – the blend of which also had people scratching their heads a bit.
Cosby thanked more rappers, including Kanye West and Snoop Dogg. Also of some surprise was the addition of comedian and actor Faizon Love to Cosby’s thank you list. Love was one of the first people to publicly support Bill Cosby when the allegations against him first started.
“I’m sending my sincere gratitude to Kanye West, Snoop Dogg & Faizon Love for their continued & consistent support. I’m so glad to hear & see that these (3) icons in the Entertainment Industry are enhancing the lives of others through philanthropy, music & humor.”
