We loved Chloe x Halle when they first debuted as the sisterly duo in 2016. We watched them grow from the innocent yet talented and extremely gifted teenagers to the young women they are today. We loved them when they showed us how they “Do It” and led us right into the “Ungodly Hour“. We love them on the sitcom “Grown-ish”, but they prove that they are just acting because, in real life, the sisters are GROWN. Now as they branch off into solo endeavors, although not broken up as a duo, we even love them separately and anxiously await to see what’s next.
Twenty-one-year-old Halle Bailey was cast in the role of “Ariel” in the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The no-doubt pivotal moment for Halle was met with much fanfare from a lot of fans, but there was that group of folks that disapproved, feeling that an African-American playing the lead role tainted the original.
She rose above a petition that was started on social media called #NotMyAriel and continued to push through with the support of fans as well as the open vocal support of Disney, who stood by their decision. Bailey also mentioned to Variety at a red-carpeted event that she would not let the “negativity” deter her from the bigger picture at hand as well as the fulfillment of her dreams.
“I feel like I’m dreaming and I’m just grateful and I don’t pay attention to the negativity,” Halle expressed. “I just feel like this role was something bigger than me and greater and it’s going to be beautiful. I’m just so excited to be a part of it.” Halle will also be contributing majorly to the film’s soundtrack.
Her older sister, 23-year-old Chloe, took social media by storm earlier this year and continues her grip while her follower count ascends to the social media heavens. In between showcasing her vocals and producing skills, the young superstar also posts fashionable looks that tend to accentuate her curves, often leaning to the racy side. It is clear that Chloe is exploring her womanhood and sexual energy, and the world loves to see it.
Well, some of the world. There was that moment where she caught made an emotional reveal to her followers that she has been battling issues with insecurity after what could have been potential backlash for her social media presence. Her explanation was filled with gratitude for those who have allowed her to grow and express herself freely.
“It just wouldn’t be right of me to show an image of me that I’m not, like a made-up, clean-cut image of me that I’m not,’ a tearful Chloe said during an Instagram Live session. “Inside, I’m such a nerd. I’m not worldly at all. But when I perform, when I make music, and when I dance, that’s when I get to tap into the sexier side of myself.”
She admitted in the same video that she viewed herself as ‘fat” for a long time, but she now loves and has accepted who she is now, and owns her body with confidence. “It really means a lot to me when I can finally get to a place where I share who I really am,” she added. “I’ve been really insecure for a long time and I’m finally at that place where I have self-confidence. And I’m really happy that I get to share that with you all. And I think it’s so important and so special when a Black woman can be strong and stand in her power, in every single way. I do it musically, with my songwriting, with my producing. I feel so bada** and I get the same feeling when I dance in my room and own my body.’
Recently, Chloe debuted as a solo performer with her rendition of the Nina Simone classic “Feeling Good” which caused quite the stir. A lot of fans were stunned and praised Bailey for her performance, while others felt it was too sexualized and began to criticize her. However, in the number that found joy in Chloe’s performance was Nina Simone’s granddaughter who took to Twitter to defend the singer.
“Everyone coming at [Chloe Bailey] for her performance of my grandmother Nina Simone’s song “Feeling Good,” tweeted granddaughter ReAnna Simone Kelly. “But what y’all don’t understand is that grandma was a free-spirited woman herself!! She would’ve loved that performance as much as I do! Relax. Chloe killed it. #NinaSimone.”
Grandma was unapologetically herself. She was a muhhhfuckin badass woman who did what she wanted when she wanted. She was a sexual woman and she expressed that. Educate yourselves !! If grandma could she probably would’ve done that performance herself 😂😂— RéAnna Simone Kelly (@reasiimone) June 19, 2021
It now looks like we have entered a new era of the Bailey sisters, and nothing can stop the waves. July 1st saw Chloe celebrating her 23rd birthday, with messages of love and well-wishes pouring in from everybody including Beyonce. As a gift to her fans, Chloe posted a visual to her social media letting them know that “this is 23” as she danced and busted into a split ever so skillfully.
“Lawd, Have Mercy!!!!!”
Oh by the way, speaking of “Have Mercy”. Not only did she bless her followers with the video clip, but it appears that was just a teaser of what’s to come. She also captioned the video, “HAVE MERCY COMING SOON”, which tells us that an upcoming single from Chloe is on the way!
Are you here for it?
