Darius McCray Claps Back After Being Interrogated About His TV Dad, Reginald Veljohnson’s Sexuality In ‘Real-Life’ After Years Of Speculation

Everybody remembers them as Carl and Eddie Winslow, the father and son duo from one of TV’s favorite families off of the show Family Matters.  Off-camera, Reginald VelJohnson and Darius McCrary keep the same loving and affectionate dynamic that they had while filming.  It’s been over 30 years since the show has won fans over for nine seasons, and their relationship has remained more than intact over the years.

With the show being currently explored for an HBOMax reboot, VelJohnson and McCrary would love to be a part.  VelJohnson, who has been hailed as one of TV’s best fictional fathers, has had steady work in both television and theater since the show’s finale episode aired.  Speaking to ComicBook.com, the actor shared his excitement for the possibility of the reboot as well as the show’s legacy.

“I didn’t realize it was going to last that long, and I did it, and people seem to love it,” the actor said. “It would be nice to do a sequel or something to it you know? I think people would enjoy that. Whatever they wanted me to do, I’d be involved in [it]. I am so excited that people are still lovin’ the stuff, the work that I … that’s been done and want it to come back. I would be immediately involved. I’m so happy that people are responding to what I did years ago and whatnot and they’re responding, you know? I love it man. Family Matters, I would love to do a reboot of that show. It would be exciting.”

The 68-year-old actor also shared how much he loved working with the cast with The Hollywood Reporter.  “My years on Family Matters were precious to me,” said VelJohnson. “During the run of the show, I saw many births, deaths, weddings … The actual family on the show became my family. We still talk to each other to this day.”

His statements ring true as the love appears to be real every time the cast get together or speak about one another.  During an interview with Comedy Hype, McCrary talked as well about his experience on the show, but things took a slight turn once asked a question regarding VelJohnson’s sexuality.

Rumors began to swirl concerning whether or not Reginald VelJohnson was gay or not, similar to that of another popular TV dad, James Avery (who played “Uncle Phil” in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air).  They were even subject to rumors that they themselves were actually dating.  However, when asked, McCrary felt as if answering that question, or even asking it, to begin with, was unnecessary.

“Why is that even a question,” asked McCrary. “I mean with any artist. What does their sexuality have to do with them entertaining you, them performing for you?”

Darius has also been subjected to similar rumors.  Recently, the actor shared a moment on social media with transgender rapper and social media/TV personality Sidney Starr that sparked rumors of a romance.  McCrary shared a video of Starr and captioned “The #Undeniable @sidneystarrbad what’s understood don’t need to be explained xoxoxo,” to which she replied “Thanks baby baby!!”
