Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade went onto Ellen to share some exciting news with her and the rest of the world – that his son Zion, originally born a boy, will use the name Zaya going forward. Dwyane and his wife actress Gabrielle Union have been very vocal in their support of their child and the three-time NBA champion discussed his own journey to becoming a supportive parent.
Wade shared with the audience how the change happened. “Our 12-year-old came home—first Zion, I don’t know if everyone knows, originally named Zion, born as a boy—came home and said, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as she and her, I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.”
The family has come out in force after trolls and others had something to say on the Internet about the couple’s child. Dwyane has been speaking publicly about his path of understanding with daughter Zaya. Back in December, he appeared on the “All the Smoke” podcast and shared more.
“I had to look myself in the mirror when [Zion] at the time was 3 years old. And me and my wife are having conversations about [noticing] he wasn’t on the boy vibe that Zaire was on,” Wade said on the podcast. “I had to look myself in the mirror and say, ‘What if your son come home and tell you he’s gay? What are you going to do? How are you going to be? How are you going to act?’”
Well, now we know and him and his wife have stepped up to the plate to support their daughter in every way possible, even supporting organizations like GLSEN, which is doing work to raise awareness and combat discrimination and harassment against members of the LGBTQ+ community since 1990. The Wade’s even reached out to the cast of Pose, trying to figure out as much information as they could to support Zaya.
Meet Zaya. She's compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her. It’s Ok to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people. pic.twitter.com/G2lLVdD2VT— Gabrielle Union (@itsgabrielleu) February 11, 2020
