The life of late rapper Nipsey Hussle was taken at the early age of 33, and the lives of those close to him have been drastically altered. Not just family and close friends, but fans of his music and supporters of him and his movement have also been affected since the fateful March 31st, 2019 shooting.
The “Racks In The Middle” rapper left behind two children, one with girlfriend Lauren London and another from a previous relationship. Undoubtedly, Nip’s family has been affected the most, as his children are young and nobody can prepare for such an untimely event. After a period of grieving the loss of the love of her life, she penned an emotional note on Instagram. “I am completely lost,” she wrote along with a photo of Nipsey. “I’ve lost my best friend, my sanctuary, my protector, my soul… I’m lost without you. We are lost without you babe. I have no words.”
Although his life was cut short, within that time span he has touched the lives of many that he’s come across. The Hip-Hop community definitely mourned and still continues to mourn his loss, as countless tributes poured in from far and wide to pay their respects, including from the likes of Drake, J. Cole, 21 Savage, and Cardi B. Rapper Snoop Dogg, an OG in the game and fellow west coast native, offered up prayers and condolences, as he was emotional from the loss.
“It’s f—d up man,” Snoop stated, sounding notably weary. “I just want to send my prayers out to Nipsey Hussle, his family, to Lauren London and her family. This is f—d up man. This is f—d up. Prayers out to the whole family. This s—t got to stop, man.” The pair had collaborated on his Malice N Wonderland album on the song “Upside Down”.
Rapper The Game was hit extremely hard by Nip’s passing as well. “Just driving around Slauson, 4 in the morning, man, ’cause I can’t sleep behind what happened to Nip, man,” said an emotional Game. “Why n—s do the homie like that, man? At his own stop. In his own hood, man. He was tryna do good for n—s, man…I’m disgusted by this.”
Also taking to social media to craft a heartfelt tribute, he reflected on meeting him twelve years prior to the date after passing the rapper a demo on Crenshaw on Slauson. “From that day to letting you open up for me on tour & us going around the world together, creating a bond & watching your growth to today…… Murdered my friend in front of his own store on a Sunday at that !!!” he wrote. He also revealed he spoke to Hussle the night before his death.
“After just talking to you on the phone just last night about the Dr. Sebi documentary, family, the kids & how we were both bout to f—k the summer up with this music, the world loses a true king,” he said. “A man that was truly about everything he spoke & stood up for all that he believed in. I keep seeing your name in these headlines bro, but it seems unreal to me…. like, I just cannot believe you gone !!!!”
He added, “I love you….. I’m really broken & saddened by the fact they did this to you SMMFH !!!!! I can only imagine what your family is going through right now… This was not how your life on earth was supposed to end !!!!!!!! They don’t even make friends like you no more.”
His bodyguard, J. Roc, could not believe that his friend, whom they spoke of becoming old friends together, would no longer have that opportunity. The rapper had done so much for his community and was in the process of doing much more. “Never in a million years I thought I would be writing some shit like this … we haven’t made a 100 Million yet … we was suppose to grow old and I call u big nose shoot jokes on you all day… but instead I’m here in tears writing this I wish I was there I would switch places with you any day the world need you here I’m so confused , lost , hurt I lost a brother , best friend, a mentor all I can here you saying now is If it was me, I would tell you, ‘N***a, live your life and grow.’”
Amongst the will wishes, one rapper’s choice of tribute wasn’t received as warmly as everyone else’s. Young Scooter posted a since deleted screenshot of one of Nip’s old tweets where Nip explains that he’s teaching “the game” to his friends so they can succeed in life. In the caption Scooter added in part, “We need more like [Nipsey Hussle]…It’s too much greed and n*****s hating on they own people.”
In response to his message, rapper Future hopped into the comment section to say “Yeah we do need more like us…I been teaching and preaching for a decade also showing and proving what hard work and dedication get u,” along with the hashtag #RIPNip.
Undoubtedly, Future Hendrix’s comments were met with universal backlash, as many said that the rapper had no business comparing himself to the late Hussle. “I get what Future was sayin but nah you not in Nipsey lane at all. U a terrible role model and you treat your baby mamas like s**t,” tweeted one person.
Another Twitter user wrote, “The fact that future is trying to class himself into the same category as Nipsey in terms of inspiration and mentoring is so funny to me, it just shows that everything you do on this earth is noted. Don’t assume you’re respected just because you’re famous.”
