The year 2021 has not been the kindest to Andre Young, better known as Dr. Dre. The producer and Aftermath Entertainment mogul has been embroiled in a severe divorce with his estranged wife, Nicole Young, a brain aneurysm that threatened to remove him from existence, and burglary to his home whilst in the hospital. Thankfully, he is still here to tell the story and be with family and loved ones. Some of Dre’s family, however, wishes things were a bit different.
If you entered Dr. Dre’s name in a Google search, chances are you would see nothing but news of his divorce proceedings. Since 1996, Dre had been married to Nicole and the union produced two children: a son, Truice, and a daughter, Truly. This year would finally see the two become single again after their “Marital or domestic partnership status is terminated and the parties are restored to the status of single persons,” according to a judgment from a Los Angeles County judge earlier this year.
Sadly the mogul suffered from a brain aneurysm that placed him in the ICU. He was able to pull through, and recently shared with the Los Angeles Times that he “never saw it coming.” “It’s a really weird thing.,” said the “Detox” rapper. “I’ve never had high blood pressure, and I’ve always been a person that has always taken care of my health. But there’s something that happens for some reason with black men and high blood pressure, and I never saw that coming. But I’m taking care of myself.” It also brought some of his concerned family together. Unfortunately, some of his family are more concerned with him than he is with them.
His eldest daughter, 37-year-old LaTanya Young, opened up to the Daily Mail about her estranged relationship with her father, claiming that they have not spoken in years. Young expressed that she hasn’t seen her father in years and although she has struggled financially, she is not motivated by money, but rather, wanting a relationship with Dre.
Latanya is one of the daughters that Dre shares with former girlfriend Lisa Johnson. “I was on assistance for a while, it’s embarrassing to say,” LaTanya said to Daily Mail, also sharing that she had been seeking employment at FedEx.. “He did offer to help me with tuition but he never speaks to me. He never set me up to be able to not need him. He never paid for college, he never did anything to help me and my sisters get along.”
LaTanya shared that she is not seeking financial assistance. She just wants “closure” from her father, who she said has not even met his grandchildren. She also shared that the reason for the estranged relationship with her father, she believes, is due to Nicole.
“I thought that after Nicole was out of the family, things would be better. I thought that my dad would come around. I would like him to make me feel like a daughter,” said LaTanya. “She was very standoffish and mysterious. I got the impression she didn’t care to know any of us.”
Young also shared a moment where when she was younger, she and her sisters went to visit their father and was met with pushback. “I went to the gate and our names weren’t on the list. The security lady still let us in because she knew us. But Nicole turned into Cruella de Vil. She asked us what we were doing there and said that he was sleeping and she threatened to call the police on us,” she shared.
Latanya added, “She eventually got him and he said: ‘When I’m sleeping, I’m sleeping, I don’t care if Jesus is at the door, I’m sleeping.’”
Also joining in the claims of not being close to Dre is his own family, Theodore Young. The 73-year-old father of the mogul shared with Page Six that he had not seen his son in years, specifically “since his grandfather died and I can’t even remember when that was,” he shared.
“We have no relationship. My other sons love me,” he continued. “They tell me they love me. But coming from where I come from, most young men like Andre who have a big success don’t give a damn about their dad.” Theodore also expressed that his mother and grandmother raised him, and also “sprinkled a whole lot of salt on me.”
