Rapper turned actor Ice Cube has come a long way from his days in N.W.A. The “It Was a Good Day” MC is now a world renowned thespian with a string of family friendly films to his name. This is a farcry from his day beefing with fellow rapper Eazy-E and making NSFW Diss Records like “No Vaseline”.
Ice Cube and NWA rose to fame in early 90’s thanks to a string of hit records and a ton of public outcry. However, after their initial success, Ice Cube stepped away from the team and their label to make music alone, feeling as though he was not being treated fair financially by the Eazy-E cofounded label. This culminated in Cube dropping the aforementioned diss record aimed at his former friends.
Ice Cube addresses Eazy-E and Heller with the harshest lyrics, criticizing Eazy’s decision to align himself with Heller saying “Heard you both got the same bank account/Dumb n***a, What you thinkin’ ’bout?” and accusing both Eazy-E and Heller of unfairly exploiting the rest of the group. Dr. Dre eventually left NWA citing similar issues with compensation.
Back in 2015, when their biopic Straight Outta Compton came out, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre talked about how the group had tried to mend fences just before Eazy-E passed away in 1996 from complications with HIV/AIDS.
“I had met with him a few months before he died, and we had talked about getting back together. And at the time, our feud had died down, and him and Dre was still at odds, so I was like, ‘If you can get Dre to do it, I’m ready.” he told the Hollywood Reporter.
“We would probably be working together right now,” Dr. Dre told The Hollywood Reporter. “[We would probably be] arguing about the work, as we did back in the past. It’s like, every project, we had some little argument about what the project should be creatively, and I would say we would probably still be doing that, but at the same time getting the work done and probably doing something amazing.”
Despite this revelation, it seems Ice Cube might still be harboring some animosity according to Eazy’s daughter Ebie Wright. Wright has been reportedly trying to get a documentary done about her late father and has been having a hard time getting Ice Cube on board.
“The only thing I will say honestly, is probably the only person that actually matters to this story I’m telling, who hasn’t talked on it so far, I’m just being completely honest … is Ice Cube.”
“You know, it really breaks my heart that he hasn’t spoken on this yet because I grew up with his sons, and I have a really good relationship with them,” Ebie continued. She said that Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson, who played Ice Cube in the N.W.A. movie, actually told her that Cube would be willing to do the documentary.
“He was gonna do whatever for me, and he was down. Since then, when we tried to book him to do the interview, he’s been ducking and dodging.”
“To be honest, I don’t know why Ice Cube wouldn’t talk about my dad with me,” she added. “I don’t know because again, he’s been on many platforms large and small, you know, talking about Eazy-E. So, I really don’t know. I don’t have the answer. We’d have to ask him,” she concluded.
Cube knows a thing or two about a film getting blocked, as he recently talked about Warner Bros holding things up with the final installment of his cult classic Friday film saga.
