R&B singer Keyshia Cole is still coping with the passing of her mother Frankie Lons. The devastating loss has left the Oakland musician struggling to deal with the pressure of being a new mom while grieving her mother. The family came together via their reality television show Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is where many where introduced to Frankie. Cole is currently trying to deliver on her promise to insure that her moms dying wish was met.
Frankie Lons was introduced to the world on season 1 episode 6 of The Way It is. The episode was titled “Mother Pearl” and featured Cole and Lons reuniting for the first time in years. Lons had given Cole up for adoption when she was young and struggled for years with drug addiction and legal issues. After finding success, Cole sought out her mother and wanted to build a relationship with her. The show would go on to follow them 3 seasons as they reconciled and Cole fought to give her and her mother a sense of normalcy amidst her growing stardom.
Lons would eventually go on to have a spin off with daught Neffie. The two also were struggling to build a relationship after Lons was absent for years. The show was also featured on BET.
BET released a statement following Lons passing. “We were saddened to hear the news of our BET family Frankie Lons’ passing,” a BET spokesperson told the media. “Viewers also got to see firsthand Frankie’s trials and tribulations as she battled addiction and as she tried to mend her relationship with her daughters,” the network said. “Frankie was a resilient woman, mom, and friend with so much to offer and will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Keyshia, Neffe, and the family during this difficult time.”
Lons was in the middle of celebrating her 61st birthday when she relapsed and died from a drug overdose. At the time of her passing most of her kids seemed to have been estranged. Cole confessed via social media that her mother had hopes for all her kids to reunite and be under one roof. Cole made sure to make this a reality as her mother’s dying wish.
While announcing plans for her mothers funeral service, she revealed that they had postponed it due to her sister getting COVID and her wanting to make sure everyone was present. “MY MOTHER WISHED TO HAVE ALL HER CHILDREN IN ONE PLACE AT ONE TIME” she said in an instagram post.
