Jada Pinkett Smith has seen her public image drastically change in recent years. The once reclusive thespian has opened up in a handful of different ways over the last couple years, thanks in large part to her platform as the host of Red Table Talk. Through it she has been able to have several revelations publicly, many of which have made some people dislike the actress. While her and husband Will Smith have gone on record to state that their marriage is a unique one and that they understand their arrangements, it still rubs people the wrong way when Jada talks so openly and passionate about the other men in her life, one of which is the late rapper Tupac Shakur.
Tupac Shakur’s murder has been the source of many conspiracies and controversy since it occurred almost 25 years ago. The hip-hop icon’s life was taken in a drive-by in Las Vegas, Nevada in September of 1996. Recently it was revealed that the weapon used in Pac’s passing was discovered in a backyard in Compton, although to date no one was formerly ever charged.
Jada has been candid about the circumstances surrounding her and Tupac’s initial introduction. They became friends on the first day of high school in the Baltimore School for the Arts. At the time Jada was a drug dealer. Their friendship took on a life of its own, as the two of them became incredibly close over the years with some speculating that their relationship was romantic. So much so that Will Smith himself has confessed to being jealous of Tupac. Even Jada admitted the undeniable chemistry of her first real encounter with the rapper, even though he had been “funny looking” in high school.
She recalled first meeting Pac saying “As soon as he approached me, he was like a magnet. Once you paid attention to him he kind of sucked you in. And we hit it off from that moment on. I don’t think either one of us thought we would have made it in the way that we did, but we knew we were gonna do something.”
As a result the two always remained incredibly close, until his passing.
This week, on the eve of what would have been his 50th birthday, Jada shared some poetry from the late rapper that he’d sent to her while in jail. She read it aloud on social media, much to the dismay of fans. Many are still not over Jada’s relationship with August Alsina, one that resulted in the very awkward Red Table Talk that featured a supportive but drained looking Will Smith.
There’s some healing that needs to happen…so I’m bringing myself to The Red Table.
