The “Original” Aunt Vivian Banks has gotten her vindication finally, after not speaking with actor Will Smith for over 20 years since her departure from the hit show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. With their successful reunion behind them, many assumed all was finally good. It seems as if Janet Hubert still has residual ill-will towards another cast member.
Many fans remembered the shadiness that Hubert had thrown not just at Will, but also cast mate Alfonso Ribiero over the years. At one point in many of her rants at the time, Hubert-Whitten reportedly called Ribiero Smith’s “tampon,” clearly showing that there was residual bad blood between the two of them as well.
After the reunion, Will Smith also sat down at wife Jada’s Red Table Talk, unpacking some of the issues that he seemed to have with Hubert over the years. Sitting down with Dr. Ramani Durvasula, Smith shared about how his own traumatic upbringing bled over into how he treated Hubert on set at the time.
“On my ‘little boy in me’ level, I needed Mommy to think I was great,” he says, of wanting Hubert’s approval. “And then once I realized that she didn’t, my dragon woke up.”
“I am so thankful for all the love being shown and the understanding,” Hubert tweeted Thursday. “Will and team let me participate in whatever I wanted and felt comfortable doing. After 27 years of disconnect we are all different people. It was great seeing everyone, life is too short!”
While Will and Janet hashed it out on the screen after over 27 years of well-known strife and animosity, fans wondered why Alfonso was nowhere to be seen during these discussions between the two, knowing that they also had beef. There was speculation maybe Ribiero was asked to not be on set.
However, the OG Aunt Viv allayed all such fears by responding to a tweet in which she made sure to say that there was nothing but love and healing happening that day, with Ribiero simply still being an in-demand and working actor in the biz, too.
Don’t assume, he was working and I wasn’t there. Let it go sweetie, we have.— Janet Hubert (@OGJanetHubert) November 20, 2020
“Don’t think I didn’t notice that Alfonzo [sic] left the set once Janet came on. I guess all old wounds haven’t healed yet,” wrote one viewer on Twitter.
“Don’t assume, he was working and I wasn’t there,” she replied. “Let it go sweetie, we have.”
However, now some are wondering if that tweet rang true about them having let it go. A clip has emerged from a recent interview with a radio station in which Hubert appears to once again subtly shade her former co-star – despite the love fest that she claimed happened.
“The person who’s been more disparaging to me has probably been more Alfonso. And I have to admit he wasn’t there. So, I didn’t get to see him because he was filming… I guess… uh ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’ who… that I haven’t watched since he’s been on it but,” said Hubert on the Roz and Mocha Show before she started to laugh.
