“Cancer” is a word that no one wants to hear, especially when it deals with one of their own loved ones. The world has been shaken over the summer with the loss of a few people from this insidious disease but R&B singer KeKe Wyatt is sharing a story of how her own child recently was able to make it to the other side of his diagnosis.
The world is still mourning the loss of actor Chadwick Boseman from cancer, and his brother recently shared with the world that their family could have experienced a double whammy of passings from the hated affliction.
Chadwick’s other brother, Broadway dancer, writer and actor Kevin Boseman, also shared with the times how he chooses to remember his brother.
“I have been trying to remember Chad and not Chadwick,” Kevin, 48, said. “And there’s just been a lot of Chadwick in the air.” However, many were shocked when Kevin shared on Instagram that he’s celebrating two years in remission from his own bout with the disease.
“I wanted to share because while it’s been a year of profound loss and tragedy for so many of us, this is good news. Something to smile about. Something to shout about,” Boseman said about being in remission. “I hope you’re smiling and shouting with me,” he wrote. “Cancer is something most of us have no control over. We can only control our responses to it, which includes being proactive about our healthcare both physically and mental.”
Giving his followers some advice that mirrored experts, Kevin encouraged everyone to see their doctors if they feel off. “Tomorrow is not promised, and early detection saves lives,” he said, ending with: “Health is wealth. True wealth.”
Sharing their story together, Wyatt and her 18-year old son Rahjah would also agree that early detection saves lives, since they had no idea that the young man even had it before they started to notice changes in him.
Recalling a story when the family went to Six Flags amusement park, they share their fear about the day they realized something was very wrong.
“[He] sat in one spot at the park and was like, ‘Mom, I literally cannot move.’ You couldn’t walk. You couldn’t do anything.” Rajah, on camera adds, “Because I was dying! I was literally dying and we didn’t know.”
After noticing the loss of appetite in her son, Wyatt finally took her son to the doctor when he started to drop weight. “[The doctor] was like, ‘Okay, let’s just run some blood. Let’s just check some blood, tests some blood and see,’” said Wyatt.
When the doctor called back and said that her son needed to go to the hospital immediately. Wyatt, joking and being dramatic, asked the doctor if it was cancer and it turns out — it was.
“Honey, my butthole fell on the floor. My throat hit my butt and my butt hit the floor. I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘What kind of cancer?’ And when she said leukemia, honey, my teeth literally started chattering.”
Fortunately, the pair were sharing the story because Rahjah is now cancer free, with the title of the YouTube video even being, “NO MORE CANCER!!! GOD HEALED MY BABY!!!”
