Michael Jackson was a once-in-a-lifetime talent whose legacy still reigns today. None have yet to dethrone the “King of Pop,” though many have tried to over the decades. While the musical attempts have been many, the personal attacks have been greater since he’s passed. A resurfaced interview gave a small insight into one of his marriages – to Lisa Marie Presley.
The daughter of Elvis Presley, another legendary talent, marrying the “King of Pop,” seemed like a fairytale when it actually came to life. When the pair married in 1994, many indeed raised their eyebrows because even then, Michael Jackson was still a huge superstar – and so was Lisa Marie’s father.
In an interview from Rolling Stone back in 2003, Lisa Marie shared a few inner details about her marriage to Michael, who she thought the man behind the music was and how all she got was a “sh*t storm” from the marriage.
Jackson had always been portrayed as eccentric and a wild spender, so when the two decided to get together, many were wondering if Lisa Marie had inherited some of the wilder tendencies or extravagant streak that her own father was famous for.
“Now people go, ‘You seem somewhat sane, you seem pretty together — what the hell was that all about?’” she told the magazine. “It put a stigma on me. A ‘What the hell was she thinking?’ stigma.”
Lisa Marie said their first conversation was about a demo she’d made that Jackson wanted to hear, and it led to further discussion of who the real Michael Jackson was. “He was very real with me off the bat. He immediately went into this whole explanation of what he knew people thought of him and what the truth was,” she said.
Though Jackson has been noted for being a prankster, she said it was his humanity that really surprised her.
“Then we sat down to talk, and he was so not what I thought he was. He was very real — he was cursing, he was funny, and I was like, ‘Wow…’
Despite that, she seemed to realize that Jackson was also aware of his perception and knew the power it wielded in other regards.
“I don’t know. I think it worked for him to manipulate that image for a little while. The hyperbaric chamber thing and all that monkey s**t and the elephant s**t. It made him mysterious, and I think he thought that was cool. But then it backfired, like it always does,” she added.
How then, did Lisa Marie find herself in a marriage with Jackson, after coming to these realizations?
“You get sucked into the, ‘You poor, misunderstood person, you.’ I’m a sucker for that,” she said. “I fell into that ‘You have this whole Howard Hughes thing that goes on in the press, and you’re not anything like that.’”
Her choice in men is something that she openly questioned herself in the interview, stating comically, “I know… If you lined up all the men I’ve been with in a row, you’d think that I was completely psychotic.”
In the end, Presley knew the marriage wasn’t going to work for her. “All I did get out of it was a s**t storm. And I got out of it.”
