Nobody wins when the family feuds. Rapper Da Brat and her older half-sister LisaRaye McCoy may need to seek healing, as the two had a slight unpleasant exchange on the latest episode of “Cocktails with Queens” on FoxSoul alongside fellow hosts Claudia Jordan, Syleena Johnson, and Vivica A. Fox.
The “Players Club” actress and the “What’chu Like” rapper have had their share of spats in the past, as siblings usually do. The siblings have had a few arguments play out in the public eye, as they both have appeared on WeTV’s “Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta”, but they always conclude in a forgiving and sentimental manner. This latest revelation between the two, however, may prove the two have some work to do.
Both of the sisters have been in the news recently for different reasons. Da Brat, who is also the first female rapper to go platinum and a co-host on Fox’s “Dish Nation”, made headlines when she made the decision to come out publicly after years of speculation and confirmed her relationship with Kaleidoscope Hair Products CEO Jesseca Dupart in an emotional post on Instagram.
Brat told Variety it was her choice to stay in the closet and not the pressures of the record label. “I was always told you want to be f***able to men and women to sell records,” she said to the publication. “You don’t want anybody to discriminate. It was absolutely my decision. I mean, you saw what happened to people like Ellen: Remember when she lost her TV show, and all these horrible things were happening? People were totally against it.”
She also spoke on the unplanned announcement and how nobody in her immediate circle was privy to it happening. “Jesseca was showing me some pictures and we were going back and forth, joking ‘I’ll post it,’ ‘No, I’ll post it’,” she explained. “So when she did, I was like, ‘Oh sh*t! I just came out after 20-something years!’ But it feels good to share with the world when you’re happy.”
Her sister, LisaRaye has been in the news for some controversial statements she’s made pertaining to August Alsina and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s “entanglement” saga, labeling Pinkett-Smith’s actions “predatory”. She then came under fire for saying to Garcelle Beauvais on her “Going to Bed” podcast that she would love to have an entanglement with Will Smith.
She also came under more scrutiny for her comments pertaining to bisexual men. When news broke of political Andrew Gillum coming out of the closet, McCoy joined in the conversation on her FoxSoul show where she made the comments “They gotta be outed! They gotta be busted!”, about men hiding their sexuality in the closet.
The actress celebrated her birthday on Monday, and on the “Queens” episode, her co-hosts surprised her with an appearance from Da Brat, to which they thought would be a great surprise. However, it took a turn when Brat popped up on the screen, as McCoy immediately became emotional and shut down. Her reason? Da Brat revealed the two haven’t been in contact for several months as there has been distance created between them.
“No, I’m not surprised,” she said. “We kind of been a little distant or whatever, so I know she’s really surprised because we’ve had a little space in our relationship or whatever. From nothing bad, but I was just going through a bunch of stuff, and, you know, I didn’t want to worry anybody, and I have a whole new significant other situation, and I was kind of scared to talk to her about it. So I haven’t seen or talked to her in a long time.”
The co-hosts tried their best to have the two come together peacefully, as even the Dish Nation co-host seemed to be ready to let bygones be bygones. McCoy wasn’t having it, however, as she interjected “I don’t give a f*ck what y’all saying. At all,” as it pertains to making peace.
We do hope the two can squash their beef and rekindle their sisterhood. In the meantime, watch the whole exchange below.
