Despite the pair’s initial hesitation at “battling” via the Verzuz platform, their particular outing was a smash hit and historic success. The program was available live on both Instagram Live and Apple Music via Apple TV, and both platforms drew in incredible numbers.

According to the platform’s official Instagram account, over 6 million viewers watched the 90’s icon shared songs, anecdotes and generally enjoy each other’s presence. Brandy and Monica took turns singing each other’s songs, showing support for both of their extensive catalogs.

While the musical walk back down memory lane was a welcome diversion from these particularly heavy times, there was a moment during the battle when Monica played a piece of Corey ‘C-Murder’ Miller’s “Down For My Ni**az,” and fans realized that Monica was referencing her old romantic partner’s current plight of trying to get his case re-considered with the hopes of being released from jail, where he currently serves a life sentence.

With the recent airing of BET’s No Limit: Chronicles, Master P’s brother Corey Miller’s case is being revisited with help from Kim Kardashian and Monica. Back in 2009, Corey Miller was convicted of fatally shooting a fan. Though he’s maintained his innocence since then, it seems as if new details have emerged and with Kardashian West’s help, C-Murder might finally see some of his own justice.

In a series of tweets, Kim laid out why she’d taken up the cause of Corey Miller’s case. In addition to new evidence, it seems as if Miller was convicted by a jury 10-2 – which is no longer legal. West was recruited R&B singer Monica, who was dating the rapper at the time of his conviction.

“Corey deserves to come home to his girls and be the father they need, be the artist & leader he’s always been as well as spread hope to those who have also experienced this,” Monica wrote on an Instagram post about the cause that Kim’s taken up with her. “My whole thing is getting my brother home. Whatever anybody do that’s gonna spark that plug, I appreciate it,” said Master P in a video released on the renewed attention to his brother’s case.

Though her relationship with Corey Miller is widely known, Monica is still using this opportunity to clear up rumors and other inconsistencies that have come about over the years, especially since her only goal here is to get him out of jail – nothing else.

Talking to Atlanta’s V103’s Kenny Burns, Monica cleared up that she’s never done anything inappropriate during her marriage while trying to help Corey Miller and nor were they even together when he got locked up.

“The idea of the ‘relationship’ of it — of course, that’s how we knew each other but we weren’t together when he was arrested. And we weren’t together during incarcerated but that never changed out friendship. It was kind of unfair when other people got brought up. For instance, my ex-husband, I never did anything disrespectful in that light. And every time I went to New Orleans, he would too.”

She also said she researched Kim’s desires to enact change thoroughly before reaching out to her. “I wasn’t trying to discredit anybody else. I did not know Kim well. I knew her in passing. Before reaching out, I researched. I researched her father. I researched why this is a desire of hers.”
