A New York City woman discovered the craziest hidden treasure in her own apartment: another apartment. Samantha Hartsoe claims to have felt a draft in her bathroom, by her mirror, when she discovered hidden behind that mirror was another abandoned area.
Hartsoe shared her journey through a four-part TikTok series of videos which she entitled “A New York Mystery” showing the reason behind a cold draft. “I’m in my New York City apartment, and it’s cold. It doesn’t matter how high the heat goes, I’m cold,” she began.

Some of her friends came to her aid for the next video to join in the journey. They removed the mirror and to their shock, found the other room. As if in a scene from a horror movie, she puts on a mask and gloves, and grabs a hammer, and proceeds to enter the other section of her apartment. Inside the room, she discovers trash bags and open windows. There is also a water bottle in the room, which she labels as a “sign of life”.
“Curiosity killed the cat, curiosity is going to kill me,” Hartsoe told NBC New York. “I can’t not know what’s on the other side of my bathroom.”
Walking through the room, she finds that nobody is inhabiting the space. “I was kind of expecting there to be somebody, especially with the water bottle being there,” Hartsoe said to New York Magazine. “And that definitely put me on edge.”
Her roommates felt that it would perhaps be dangerous for her to travail through the apartment herself, nevertheless she got through it. “My roommates definitely thought I was going to be dead. When I came back they were excited,” she said.
Hartsoe is still perplexed, and so is the building’s management who claims they have no idea how that happened.
Her story, shared and viewed by over 9 million social users, caught the attention of Ellen Degeneres. The talk show host brought her on the show as a special guest to engage in a deep dive of the situation, asking questions as to what she feels on the apartment’s origin.
“I’m thinking, I’m brushing my teeth, I’m taking out my Invisalign and at any point, this mirror could have [fallen off] and I’m done,” she said. Hartsoe also admitted to Ellen that the mirror had yet to be secured at the time, saying that she should put “superglue” on it.
Her family has been reveling in their daughter’s newfound viral fame. Adding on to the already crazy story, Ellen Degeneres surprised Hartsoe at the end of the interview with a brand new vanity mirror for their bathroom, as well as another hidden surprise behind it in the form of 10k.
“Your story was fantastic,” said DeGeneres. “Seal that mirror.”
