Rapper Kanye West Wins Grammy For Best Gospel Album At 2021 Grammy Awards

Kanye West is no stranger to Grammy Wins. He was tied with Jay-Z for the most wins by a Hip-Hop artist prior to Sundays telecast. However Sunday was a first for West, who took home his first Grammy for Best Gospel Album.

It was his first win in over 8 years. West was not present to accept the award, which was excepted on his behalf by pre show host and presenter Jhene Aiko.

West last nomination was in 2019. That year he was up for Best Producer (non classical).

His last Grammy win was for “No Church in the Wild” in 2013. The Jay-Z and Frank Ocean assisted hit snatched up best rap/sung collaboration. That same year “N—– in Paris” scored the Grammy for best rap song.

While this was his first Grammy for Gospel, it wasn’t the first time his Gospel work was celebrated.

At the Billboard Music Awards, he won for Top Gospel Artist, Top Christian Album, Top Gospel Album and Top Gospel Song. “Thank all my Christians who’ve been praying for me,” West said in a video acceptance speech for those awards in October. “Praying I would serve.”

He’s also a triple winner at the GMA’s (Gospel Music Association) Dove Awards. At that ceremony he won for traditional gospel album (“Jesus Is Born”) and rap/hip-hop album (Jesus Is King). He also won Best rap-hip-hop recorded song for “Follow God.”

Fans of the College Dropout artist were not only happy for him, but shocked as well. West has had a crazy year. He ran for president and lost. He is currently going through a divorce and has been displaying more and more erratic behavior.

The most erratic was when he urinated on his Grammy award last year. West placed one of his 21 awards in the toilet and pee’d on it in a twitter post. He captioned the video “Trust me … I WONT STOP.”

In a post resharing the infamous video, one fan pointed out “kanye west really won a whole grammy after doing this.”

Many people were confused that the Academy would still reward him after he showed such disrespect for their award. See more tweets below.
