Some times in life, nobody disappoints you more than family. Such was displayed when Nelly took to social media to get some things off of his chest in regards to his father, Cornell Haynes Sr. It seemed like a random outburst as fans began to wonder what made the St. Louis rapper announce his issues with his father, but fans later made the discovery.
You may recall that for years the “Air Force Ones” rapper was involved in a relationship with hit R&B singer Ashanti. When they became a couple, both of their careers were at a high. On the outside looking in, it was as if the pair were best friends that became lovers and fans were enthralled in the way that their relationship blossomed. The two made music together as well during the relationship, and talks of engagement began to spark after Ashanti expressed that it “may be on the horizon”. Nelly also praised his then lover for being a strong support system for him following the death of his sister on his Behind The Music episode on VH1.
However, their relationship wouldn’t be able to survive, and the two split in 2012, leaving Ashanti feeling “betrayed”, which she revealed in an interview on The Meredith Viera Show. “I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, it allows them to act out of character,” the “Pretty Little Thing” performer said to the talk show host on their breakup after 10 years together. “I’ve been betrayed.”
She continued, adding that she was not a big fan of people being “cowards”. “It’s important to know what you want and get it,” she said. “I’m in a different place right now.” Since their breakup, the rapper has moved on to actress Shantel Jackson, aka “Miss Jackson”, whom he met when filming for his 2014 reality show “Nellyville”. The couple has been dating since, and one would think that the past would be left in the past, except it seems as though the rapper is still holding on to grudges concerning his famous ex.
In most cases, it’s natural for families to get close to whomever you’re dating, and that may be exactly what Nelly’s father feels towards his once “almost daughter-in-law”. During one of Ashanti’s tour stops in Nelly’s hometown of St. Louis, Mo., Haynes Sr. shows up at the venue to support her, and the two filmed a video that was later uploaded to Instagram. Ashanti is seen up close with Nelly’s father, where she says “Alright, Mr. Haynes. We in the Lou [St. Louis]. Did you have a good time at the show?” Haynes Sr. responds, “Yes ma’am, I’m enjoying myself. Yep, thank you. I appreciate it.”
Although the clip appeared on her story, which has a lifespan of 24 hours, it definitely caught Nelly’s attention, leading him to make multiple scathing posts on social media. He posted to Instagram a screen-capture of a tweet that he composed that read, “The word father is a strong word..something I never knew anything about as a child because mine never did what he had to do only what he wanted… ‘HOPE IT WAS WORTH IT POPS IM DONE WITH YA NO MORE MONEY FROM ME” LET THEM PAY YA BILLS..!!’

The rapper didn’t stop there, mentioning his mother in the next screengrab that read, “You don’t see my mama … should have know she would hold it down she always had a job came to my games saw her son graduate saw me score my 1st touchdown bought me my 1st pair of J’s wiped my tear away when I lost the big game and taught me how to play sports.! “MAMAS BOY”..!!!” the tweet read. He then captioned the post, “S/O to all the mamas that had to be fathers for the kids…to my mama who taught me how to catch and play ball took me to my game borrowed money to buy me cleats and stood up and cheered when I walked the stage .. I LOVE YOU Mama….!! I GET IT NOW TOTALLY..!!!”
We hope that Nelly and his father can work out their differences because nothing is more important than family. For now, you can catch the rapper on the current season of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars.
