Rapper Nicki Minaj Spark Controversy After Claiming White People Treat Her Better Than ‘The Blacks’ Do In Resurfaced Deleted Tweet

The topic of Black media vs. white media isn’t a new one.  For what seems like forever, black media outlets have been making it known that they don’t really get the due respect from celebrities or their teams, especially compared to the predominantly white outlets.  In some instances, it may be unknown to the interviewee what their teams may have prefaced to the outlet what they may or may not engage in the line of questioning with, but sometimes, it comes from the artist themselves.

Most recently, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion was slated to be interviewed by The Breakfast Club on the promotional trail for her newly released debut album Good News.  The hosts brought to the listeners’ attention, however, that her team had activated that same behavior with them, and their disdain with the practice.

“You know what?  I yeah I think it’s crazy because when she does white publications she’s able to talk and talk about everything that she wants to talk about but when she goes to the black press and black publications there’s a list that the label sends out that you know don’t ask her about this, don’t talk about this, don’t talk about that,” said DJ Envy. “But we’re the ones that support her and hold her down and play her music and talk about all the good things that she does and go through all that stuff…it’s just weird when they do that.”

Charlamagne chimed in with well wishes to the rapper on her debut, but added his dislike for the apparent divide. “You know I just don’t like when artists go to white publications and spill their guts but when they come to the black media outlets they want us, they have a long laundry list of things not to talk about,” the Shook Ones author stated.  

The popular nationally syndicated radio show also spoke on this behavior last year when Get Out actor Lakeith Stanfield echoed similar statements on social media, specifically calling out media outlets like TheShadeRoom, WorldStar, Lipstick Alley, and The Breakfast Club.  “It’s a fact that a lot of these platforms are usually or tend to be feeding grounds for negative reinforcement toward BLACK ‘nonconformists’,” the actor wrote in a since deleted Instagram post. “They bolster faux vanity and hold a white supremacists scope over black men and women often highlighting negative attributes and downplaying mind-expanding ones. They serve as bottomless coward consumption pits and digital, audio, or otherwise slave mentality museums.”  Stanfield then tells his followers to mention whomever they want to in his comment section, showing that he did not care what the ramifications would bring.  

His post didn’t sit well with Charlemagne, who gave him the honors as the “Donkey Of The Day” on his popular segment.  Admitting that Black media outlets, particularly their radio show, did not get it right all the time saying that they’ve made “plenty mistakes on the radio,” but took offense to being labeled “anti-black”.

“This came from a place of love,” he said in the segment. “Two takeaways I want to leave you with: One, be the change you want to see in media and stop acting like a d—n buffoon in all your interviews. And two, don’t burn those Black bridges just because White folks in Hollywood sent you a boat, because history shows us what happens when White folks put Black folks on a boat.”  

Another huge public figure that has come under fire for similar comments is rapper Nicki Minaj, who posted and deleted controversial remarks in the midst of an ongoing feud with Wendy Williams.  When it was announced that the rapper had married her now-husband, Kenneth Petty, in true Wendy fashion, she gave her opinions during her “Hot Topics” segment. 

Catching wind of Williams’s comments on her show, Nicki offered a response of her own on her Twitter.  “So I really wanted to pray for you today, because look at where you are now in your life,” she said, directly addressing Williams. “Look at what age you are. You’re sat up there being vicious all this time and paid for that man’s mistress all these years. You paid for her shopping sprees, you paid for her hotels, you probably even paid for her GYN bills, you paid to have that baby delivered, h—.”

It was an ill-advised tweet she sent afterward that stirred plenty of controversy from fans and those that got a chance to notice it.  “What the white ppl post. >>>>>>,” she stated. “The blacks only post the few seconds where I raise my voice to push their narrative.” It didn’t take long for fans to chime in with their thoughts, as it didn’t sit well with them.

“Were you not complaining a few years ago about white media degrading black women and painting you as the ‘angry black woman?’ Seems like the music industry only lets coons succeed.  Get some therapy before you do more damage to your legacy,” one user wrote. 

Some fans also found fault in her usage of the label “the blacks”, deeming it problematic as well.  “You know what..I love your music. But the fact that you said “white ppl” and then refer to us as “the blacks” just furthers the idea that “blacks” aren’t people,” remarked one of her fans on Twitter. “That’s an idea that goes wayyy back. I’m mad hurt. Unconscious ideas are a mf. You gotta be aware of what you saying.”

Everyone comments on her, she’s a star. White media doesn’t even lift her up like that, they just talk about her too. Good and bad. I can’t speak on her experience. And she could talk about it, if she wasn’t busy retaliating against everyone who mentions her name.

Although deleting the tweet, Nicki hasn’t offered any comments on what she’s said.
