Rapper Nicki Minaj has had a year full of up and downs like no other. While the hip-hop megastar can count becoming a wife and mother to her list of accomplishments, she also saw her brother sentenced to life in prison and lost her father a few weeks ago to a tragic accident.
The Minaj family’s first devastating blow, the sentencing of her brother Jelani Maraj, came down in January of 2020. The horrifying accusations first went public in 2017 and stemmed from time he spent with an 11 year old child in 2015. He was eventually handed a 25 to life bid. During his sentencing, his famous sister send a letter to the judge asking for leniency on her brother. She said in the letter that Jelani was the “most patient, gentle, genuine, giving selfless man I know”
Afterwards, Minaj life took a turn towards the positive. After reuniting with childhood friend Kenneth Petty, Minaj decided it was time to settle down. The two went public with their romance, tied the knot, and welcomed a beautiful baby boy towards the end of 2020.
Despite the fairytale nature of it all, the union was marred with controversy. Petty has a long history of criminal activity, including inappropriate claims from another young woman when he too was a teen.
His criminal history has been a go to topic for gossip bloggers keen to use Minaj’s name for headlines, and has also made it hard for the couple to find happiness due to the convictions making it hard for him to become a resident of California where the couple now live.
While she kicked off 2021 relatively quiet and enjoying the perks of a new marriage and motherhood, Minaj was dealt a devastating blow in the form of her father dying in a hit and run. Robert Maraj was walking along the street when a man hit him and took off without helping him. The killer was later identified and turned himself in.
Nicki’s mom is taking legal action against the man. Carol Maraj has filed a $150 million lawsuit against Charles Polevich.
According to Insider “70-year-old Charles Polevich has officially been sued for millions by Nicki Minaj’s mother, Carol Maraj, courtesy of a wrongful death lawsuit. Carol Maraj filed the lawsuit in the Nassau County Supreme Court through her attorneys Benjamin Crump and Paul Napoli for $150 million.”
