Birdman has been a mighty figure in Southern hip-hop for a number of decades and he’s reigned over an empire that includes the likes of Drake, Lil’ Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Young Thug. There’s no doubt that he’s close with all of his artists but resurfaced clips and video have many wondering if he’s maybe too close to one artist in particular — Young Thug.
Earlier this year, Baby appeared on the Everyday Struggle podcast and talked about the great relationships that he has with the artists he works with – and how he is “forever in business with them.”
“I got a great relationship with Drake, I got a great relationship with my son, Wayne. I always looked at Nicki like a little sister, I always have had a great relationship with Nicki. Everybody in a good space, we done put the past behind us and we’re moving forward, and we’re trying to accomplish a mission. The whole thing is to complete what we started. Everybody in a good space and we keeping it moving.”
In the same interview when asked about Young Thug, Birdman says that Thug’s like his “brother” and even lived with him for 4-5 years. It sounds very similar to how Wayne was heavily influenced by Birdman – a fact which recently resurfaced in a disturbing video.
In a video clip that’s since reemerged, Wayne can be seen talking to a younger artist signed to his label Cash Money Records Lil Twist and asks the rapper if he’s having sex yet. Then, Wayne launches into the story of how, at the age of 11, he had his first experience with an older woman and “loved it.”
It’s a bit disturbing when, as part of the story, Wayne recounts that there were numerous adults in the room, including head of the label and his “Paw,” as Wayne calls him, Birdman. Birdman is the infamous head of Cash Money Records, and one that Wayne has had a complicated relationship over the years, despite their closeness.
Another sobering aspect of the video is that Lil Wayne claims he became “Lil Wayne” on the day he experienced an older woman for the first time – ultimately culminating in him having a daughter at the young age of 15.
Earlier in his career, the genre-defying Young Thug attracted a lot of attention for his gender fluidity, not seen very often in a Black mainstream rapper signed to a label like Cash Money Records. Thugger has been in fashion magazines and even hit runways with his eclectic style and openness with his expression.
It’s this freedom that also unfortunately doesn’t resonate as easily within the world of hip-hop and his social media posts in which he’s called Birdman his “lover” have resurfaced.
“Me and my lover dripping!!!! Like always!!!” he wrote on the long-since deleted post.
There’s still various video footage of the encounter – and at the time, it came after a fraught period in Young Thug’s career in which he was already staring down accusations of “gay bashing” and threatening an LGBTQIA person at the time.
