Brian McKnight is one of the most recognizable R&B singers of the 90’s and his string of hits still are the soundtrack to many a wedding today. The musician and artist also have children who are as talented as he is, and he made a small group in his later years with his children who then supported him on the road. Turns out that it seemingly wasn’t enough for them.
Brian McKnigh’s chidden, Brian McKnight, Jr. and Briana McKnight, 2 of the children from his first marriage, upended the blog world when they took to Instagram to call out their father for abandoning them back in 2019. It was stunning, as many hadn’t been privy to the elder McKnight’s private life in a such a way before. The man who sang such songs like “Anytime” was now being accused of much more “heinous” things, according to his eventual response.
Though both of Brian McKnight’s children are older adults now, it seems as if their history with their father is still affecting them greatly – and McKnight, Jr. was the first to fire off a lengthy Instagram post about his famous father.
“I can’t imagine abandoning my children man. Its hard not to imagine the psyche of a man who can truly just turn his back on his actual sons, on his actual blood, and creations. It’s mind boggling to me. I don’t think there is any situation that merits the way my father has chosen to treat my brother, my sisters, and his grandchildren, one of which being his first born’s, first born son, who also bares our name. It breaks my heart, but not for myself, specifically for my siblings, and my children.”
His daughter Briana then joined in, making the chorus against him swell to two of his children – and dragging fans further into a family dynamic that many were unaware of, as the children had even toured and sang with their father.
“‘Daddy’s little girl’ was never really a thing for me. Nobody understands what I’ve been through except for my siblings. Believe it or not, I’m not always the person I seem to be. I’m not always happy and most of the time I’m battling my own demons just like everyone else. I grew up thinking that the things that happened to me and my dad’s relationship was my fault.”
For his part, McKnight responded to his children with his own upload, calling their allegations “heinous” and sharing that his children simply are no longer children and he’s having to exercise “tough love.”
In the video, he reiterates his children are grown, and even his new wife, Leilani, tried to get them jobs and wants to see them together. But they were unwilling to finally be “men,” he said.
The elder McKnight also causally drops that he called Child Protective Services on his daughter’s mother after he discovered she may have been having sex — with an older cousin. He seems to know his children are entitled but accepted the blame for it.
“I guess one of my only faults is that I gave my children everything I didn’t have in hopes that they would appreciate it because I know how much I would’ve appreciated it when I was their age.”
