R&B Singer Monica Accused Of Wearing ‘Fake’ Fendi During Her Instagram Verzuz Battle With Brandy, After Fans Are Unable To Find Items In Store

Now that the Verzuz of the ages is completed, fans have started their post-mortem analysis of the Brandy vs. Monica battle that went down Monday night. There was plenty of music, dancing, alleged shade and awkward moments between the two songbirds but in the end, a good time was had by all. Fans then started to wonder what the two women were wearing, especially Monica.

Brandy and Monica’s 1998 duet “The Boy Is Mine” went on to be #1 pop hits for both stars and netted them each a Grammy. Fast forward to 2020. Both stars are still active in the music industry, and clearly, their legacies have left them in demand with fans. Previously, they’d both been approached about the possibility of a battle and there didn’t seem to be much of an appetite for it.

“People have put us against each other for twenty-something years,” Monica previously told Atlanta’s V-103. “I’ve been trying to tell people for about 25 years you can like both! You’re going to turn this into 1998 all over again, and I have no interest in that.” The singer shared that she’s not interested in a battle and had one condition if it was to take place.

“[I]t would have to be a celebratory form of it. It would just have to be. I just don’t see it any other way,” the Grammy-winning singer said. “The reality is, I think ‘Boy Is Mine’ is such a phenomenal record because we’re polar opposites. And I think that’s dope.”

Their full polar oppositeness was on display throughout the evening, as you could tell that the two singers were more cordial than friendly. At the beginning of the evening, they both admitted to the fact that they hadn’t been in the same room with each other for almost 10 years. They both seemed to be in good spirits, but their differences were even exemplified by the clothes that both were wearing.

With over 1 million people watching via Instagram Live and even more watching through the official Apple TV app, the Verzuz surely broke record books. Up until then, the biggest battle had been another set of R&B singers, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. It seems as if the R&B versions of the Verzuz battle are continuing to prove ever popular.

Brandy and Monica’s Verzuz broke history for another reason – a Vice-Presidential nominee visited for the first time. The country’s first Black woman Vice-Presidential nominee on a Presidential ticket, Senator Kamala Harris greeted the women and encouraged everyone to vote before the music started.

Other celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Lizzo, Queen Latifah and even Michelle Obama made appearances in the Instagram Live’s chat section. “I know my soul mate in here somewhere,” rapper Meek Mill was screenshot saying in the comments. It was celebs like Solange and Tyler, The Creator that drew attention to the women’s outfits.

Brandy’s look was more laid-back and indicative of her West Coast roots. Styled by Ashley Sean Thomas, Brandy rocked a Libertine blazer and Bottega Veneta sandals – some fans thinking that the white sandals were a shady callback to Monica’s white sandals she wore in her first video that had become a meme of their own.

It was Monica’s fit and look that really sent heads turning however. Mo’ rocked a custom-made Fendi corset, jacket and beret, complete with the eye-catching boots and/or pants that drew so much attention.

Of course, fans were wanting the look and apparently were calling Fendi stores to get it. According to fashion girl on Instagram @londongirlinnyc, the Fendi look did not come from Fendi in Atlanta.

Soon as fans caught wind, the look wasn’t available at the Fendi store in Atlanta, many began to speculate whether the look was real or fake.

One fan questioned why a celebrity like Monica would ever wear fake Fendi. “Not saying its real or fake but why would someone like Monica wear fake fendi on something that would have alot of viewers?? That stitching is looking sus tho. And then what’s that black piece sticking out?” Another fan questioning who did the stitching?, “I wonder if it’s made by that girl that made Reginae’s Dior bustier. Everybody cannot be Dapper Dan!” Followed by another fan who pointed out the outfit looked custom. “Tbh it looked custom made with fendi print, just fendi didnt make it lol. now whether its real fendi print or not, well…”

However, according to Fashion Bomb Daily, Monica’s custom Fendi look was created by Sir Babajagne, which included a hat, corset, jacket, and long leather pants. Stylist Kollin Carter came up with the concept, and put the whole chic ensemble together.

He’s also created looks for Naomi Campbell, Saweetie, Normani, and even Cardi B. Jagne also created some of Cardi’s iconic looks in her “W.A.P” video.
