Singer Monica’s riding high after a successful Verzuz battle that reunited her with fellow child star Brandy, in an evening that was memorable for many. Now, Monica’s continuing to interact with her fans and she has some questions about the nicknames they’ve given her over the years – including “Goonica.”
According to the Verzuz platform, over 6 million people watched Brandy and Monica’s battle, that also featured an appearance from VP-elect Kamala Harris and raised $250K for When We All Vote, making it another record-breaking Verzuz.
While it seemd over the years that Brandy’s personality was more of a sweet, Disney-embracing type, Monica’s always been very vocal about her upbringing in Atlanta and how it formed her – both in her songs and interviews. A true Southerner, she’s also shared her love of firearms, too.

So fans were surprised when Monica posted to her Instagram, with a sweet picture, asking why they called her that.
“I have absolutely no idea why y’all call me Goonica! Anyone care to explain [laughing Emoji]… Why don’t you all tell me below! Just a little Morning #MoTalk”
Tell her below they did. Monica’s fans immediately prepared and sent her all the receipts about how she came to get that name, both on Instagram and Twitter, where she crossposted. However, the best comment came from Missy Elliott, one of Monica’s main collaborators over the years: “Because anyone that talk in 3rd person Most def a time bomb💣 you said just to show MONICA NOT HAVING IT😳 you said it like that’s not you 😂🤣”
