R&B singer Nivea has been through the trenches, but the mother of 4 has taken her life to the “Laundromat” and cleaned herself up! The singer has been out of the spotlight for years, with her last album major label album “Complicated” being released in 2005, and the indie release “Animalistic” in 2006. Now that she’s putting out new music, Nivea is opening the doors to her world and sharing the intimate details of how dr*gs nearly took her life and what saved her.
BET had the “Don’t Mess With My Man” appear on their docu-series Finding where she documented her life as an artist signed to Jive Records and recalled the ups and downs of the industry. She then appeared on the M+M+M+ Show where she got more revealing about a lot more things, including her past usage.
“I’m a be honest. I did everything late,” Nivea said to the show’s hosts. “I didn’t smoke weed until 2010 after I stopped breastfeeding my youngest son. The pill thing I can’t do. I drink though. I had to stop that. Brown liquor — I’m a whiskey girl — has sugar in it and it makes you freakin’ fatter. I had to stop that. But yeah, I like to drink.”
As for her substance of choice she shared, “I smoke w**d here and there. Never no needles, no cr*ck. I’ve done coke. But no pills. That’s it.”
Nivea then dug deeper into her addiction. “My experience with [coke], that wasn’t something I felt public with where people want to party. It didn’t do none of that for me,” the singer explained. “It was more of a mental thing. I had a different reaction than most people. I wanted to be alone. It was personal. I wanted to write, play Sudoku, it put me in my head.”
The singer then revealed her family’s history of substance use, and that her reasons for kicking the habit were also her reason for living: her children.
“I come from an addicted family; both of my parents were on c**ck,” she shared. “My mom got off and my dad struggled over the years, and recently, over the past year, went to rehab, but that was the last 30 years of my life. The struggle is real. I was real caught up with [the coke] situation. It was pretty bad.”
Nivea added, “I pulled myself up out of it, though. In the midst though, I knew that was something I was allowing to happen, which was dangerous and reckless, but I knew I was going to come out of it somehow. Even though sometimes it got tough, and I was like, ‘Damn.’ I talked to Dream about it. I was about to give the kids up, which I think helped me. Because without them, I would have died … I can’t live without all of them. I need them for air.”
Thankfully, she was able to kick the habit. The singer released her latest album Mirrors in September of 2019. Nivea is currently said to be working on new music.
