If you don’t remember singer Olivia, she was discovered during the Clive Davis era of J Records, on a label with such other talents as Alicia Keys and Jimmy Cozier. As part of G-Unit Records, Olivia was the first R&B singer signed to the label and despite her success, she’s spilling the tea on her career and the challenges she’s faced – especially with ex-boss 50 Cent.
50 Cent has a habit of artists that he’s worked with speaking up about their treatment at the hands of the multi-hyphenate mogul. Olivia’s just the latest in a line of G-Unit-affiliated artists with something to say – with rapper Young Buck suffering what many would consider the brunt of 50’s trolling ways.
50 Cent has effectively closed the door on a G-Unit reunion after he threw all his former group members under the bus. 50’s shown little remorse for how or what G-Unit is doing these days and he further commented on that during a recent interview with DJ Whoo Kid.
“Is there going to be a G-Unit movie, man?” asks Whoo Kid to 50 Cent over the Zoom call. I don’t care to do that,” said 50. “I’d like to forget the G-Unit.”
Despite the former affiliated DJ pleading on behalf of fans, 50 seemed to regret that he even had to be in a group on his rise to stardom, commenting on how Kendrick Lamar never brings his TDE-affiliated labelmates onto stage with him, ever.
“Kendrick doesn’t even let those boys come on stage with him. I could have did that! What the f–k I’m bringing thirty n—as on the stage for? I could have did it like Kendrick.”
One of those left behind in the saga of 50 Cent is singer Olivia. Despite her own hit “Bizounce” before she became the “First Lady of G-Unit,” the “Candy Shop” singer also recently shared that she suffered at the hands of 50 Cent’s hype machine early on in her career as well.
“We had a good 4 year run,” said Olivia in a video for True Exclusives. But due to 50’s insistence upon G-Unit being an ‘island” by themselves, and not having any executives that were familiar with R&B, it started to crash to a halt. “I want [her album] to be with strictly G-Unit people,” which left Olivia “heartbroken.”
However, Missy Elliott did around 4 records at the time for Olivia’s album and presented them to 50 Cent, going all out to convince him that the two should work together. Unfortunately, 50 said “that’s not the route we want to go” to Missy Elliott – surprising Olivia because she thought the songs were “all smashes.”
Olivia then talks about the rumors at the time that were circulating that she slept with Missy Elliott – and how 50 Cent started them because he thought Olivia was mad at him for not using the records that Missy produced for her.
“So he was like, I’mma start some sh*t just because she’s mad that I didn’t take the records that her and Missy did.”
50 Cent eventually went on The Breakfast Club and told Charlamagne Tha God, ‘Missy started hitting that’ when the rapper was asked why he had an issue with Olivia working with Missy.
