Former football star Andre Rison, sitting down with DJ Vlad, reminisced about how he, even at 20 years old, was supporting a lot of Black talent that were broke – because of their label deals and otherwise.
“Here they go together, but one got some money and other one don’t got no money,” speaking on how both he and Lopes were breaking records at the time – him as one the greatest receivers of all time at 20 years of age, and her with TLC’s success but famously dealing with money issues.
Recently on Instagram during a pandemic interview, Dupri was asked if there was a group that he regretted passing up on, and in a lengthy answer, he responded TLC. At the time, he felt unable to split his time between TLC and Kriss Kross, the other young group that many remember Jermaine rocketing to fame – but Dupri does credit group member Left Eye for inspiring his work with Kriss Kross.
In March 2019, Dupri told TV One’s Uncensored that Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes being the inspiration behind Kris Kross’s backward style.
DJ Vlad stated at the beginning of the interview that Lopes met Rison one night in a club with Tupac and from there, she never went home. When speaking on the label’s famed groups and how all of them had money issues, Rison was empathetic to Lopes and the rest of the group.
“So, I’mma hold her down. So I’m holding it down for Left Eye, Chilli, T-Boz, Pac, [MC] Breed…” Rison did share that he enjoyed his time with Lopes. “She was a beautiful person…we shared some sh*t from a mental standpoint.”
Despite his fond reminiscence about the departed music star, another party that could have been involved in the reason that Left Eye burned down a Super Bowl champion’s house has recently revealed her own involvement in pop culture history – Sandra “Pepa” Denton, of hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa.
According to OnSite, the raptress is releasing her own biography, I’ll Take Your Man, in which she reveals that thanks to Andre, the TLC rapper assumed that the two had slept together and she wasn’t having it at all.
“Remember the night Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes burned down the house of Andre Rison (former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver)? Well, I was sort of in the middle of that. Andre and I never messed around. I’m innocent of that crime.”
According to Denton, she and Rison had bumped into each other a few times in the industry but were definitely not together.
“Apparently, he had been talking about me to her. Brothers, you can’t do that. Now, maybe he did like me like that, but again, we never went there. One night, he and Lisa are watching TV and my video comes on, and he gets all excited and says something like: ‘Pep, that’s my girl!’”
While we may never know what the true cause of the fire was that night, Pepa said it ultimately wasn’t her fault – because she had given the two backstage passes to a show the very night that Rison’s mansion burned down.
