It’s been a whirlwind week – especially if you’ve not yet caught up on the news about what’s been happening between the United State, Iran and Iraq. Well, in a climate like this – we’re all laughing to keep from crying, including comedian George Lopez. Those laughs might turn to tears when the Secret Service shows up at his doorstep, though.
On the Instagram @chicanoworldstar, a post was made that further pushed the narrative that emerged previously about Iran offering an $80 million bounty for the “head” of President Donald Trump. George Lopez, being a comedian, commented on the post that “we’ll do it for half” – and that can be construed as a threat against the President, according to the Secret Service.
TMZ is reporting that that is indeed in motion. Apparently, the Secret Service is interested in George’s comment and are determining what steps to take next, if any. Next steps more than likely will include an in-person interview with George Lopez to discuss his comment and ascertain his true intent.
George didn’t escape blowback – people on both side of the political spectrum have spoken out about George’s comment, as innocent or innocuous it may have been.

This isn’t the first time this week that people have been castigated for joking about important matters, either. People have been joking about how “World War III” is on the way and collectively, people took to the internet to trauma bond about it. Soldiers (both deployed veterans) weighed in on if it was appropriate to be making such jokes.

Can we just take a second to recognize the fact that while people are making WWIII jokes the troops are literally on their knees in prayer for the whole situation. Maybe we should join them rather than joke. Just a thought. pic.twitter.com/TuJFuBNk9Q— Tamara Lebeuf (@lebeuf_tamara) January 7, 2020
The Secret Service has a track record of interviewing celebrities that make jokes, even though it seems nothing has truly happened after the fact. Eminem got into trouble into in 2018 after his song “The Ringer” criticized Donald Trump. That case was closed.
Comedian Tom Arnold was interviewed by the Secret Service after he challenged the President to a fight after he made remarks that Tom didn’t agree with. Tom also recorded the agents interviewing him and it was posted to YouTube.
Lastly, comedian Kathy Griffin was interviewed in 2017 after posting a satire picture of herself holding a decapitated head of President Trump. She suffered major blowback and career stagnation because of it.
While we are all trying to collectively laugh through our pain, never forget that the government is always paying attention, George!
