Stacey Dash had a change of heart this past week. The controversial media personality made a reputation for herself in the last decade for her extremely conservative opinion. One that saw her championing former President Trump and scored her a gig on Fox News. Now, 5 years later, Dash is looking to make amends for the toxic time in her career.
Speaking with the Daily Mail recently, she told them she felt misrepresented and used during her time at Fox News.
“I’ve lived my life being angry, which is what I was on Fox News. I was the angry, conservative, Black woman. And at that time in my life it was who I was.” she said.
“I realized in 2016 that anger is unsustainable and it will destroy you. I made a lot of mistakes because of that anger. There are things that I am sorry for. Things that I did say, that I should not have said them the way I said them. They were very arrogant and prideful and angry. And that’s who Stacey was, but that’s not who Stacey is now. Stacey’s someone who has compassion, empathy.”
The “Clueless” star has a lot of work to do before she’s embraced again by people of color. Famously she compared actor, Jesse Williams to a Hollywood plantation slave after receiving his humanitarian award at the BET Awards.
“Either we want to have segregation or integration,” said the actress, who is Bajan, African American and Mexican. “And if we don’t want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black. If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms. It’s a double standard.”
Speaking on the incident, former Aunt Viv Janet Hubert told Essence Magazine at the time that someone needed to knock some sense into Dash.
“Somebody needs to slap the little bit of black she got on her off of her, okay?” Hubert said. “The little bit of black she got on her, off of her, because girlfriend has worked on BET more than most actresses have.”
She went on to point out that Dash has been employed several times by the BET Network and should be the last person trying to take shots at them. She also took a moment to highlight why the BET Awards are so important to the community. Without them “we would have nothing to honor those wonderful performances.”
As far as Dash’s motivation for being so controversial, Hubert has her opinions.
“I think she’s just saying this kind of bull because she wants sensationalism and she’s working for Fox and she needs a job and she’s making a check,” she said. “And she’s bringing controversy to herself. Stacey is a bit of a media ho.”
