Bill Cosby is a free man, and while many may still be confused on just how he’s been able to get out of jail, one thing there is no confusion on is that many are still upset with Phylicia Rashad. The awarding winning actress was one of the first to vocalize their support of Cosby following the announcement that he would be released. The newly appointed Howard University dean has been a target ever since, with many calling for the university to fire her. Cosby has since responded to this in a twitter exchange today with singer Stephanie Mills.
On June 30th, Rashad’s now deleted tweet read “FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!” This was her response to the news that her former television husband had been freed. Cosby’s case was thrown out on a technically following some mishandling with the statement used to convict him. According to the New York Post, “Pennsylvania’s highest court overturned Bill Cosby’s conviction Wednesday after finding an agreement with a previous prosecutor prevented him from being charged in the case.”
Phylicia Rashad has stood by Cosby since day one. She has gone on record to say that she believes this is all an orchestrated attack on Bill Cosby and that what is truly happening is the destruction of his legacy as a black man in media.
Following her initial statement, Rashad followed it up clarifying that while she was happy her friend is free, she still stands with victims. She claims her post was in no way meant to be insensitive to their truth, noting that she knows first hand from friends and family how these type of instances can ruin lives.
Howard was also forced to release a statement, distancing themselves from Rashad and her stance while promising their loyalty to women who have been affected. They said “Howard will stand with survivors and challenge systems that would deny them justice, we have full confidence that our faculty and school leadership will live up to this sacred commitment.”
In response to mounting pressure to fire Rashad, singer Stephanie Mills chimed in asking Howard to also return the millions of dollars that Cosby has donated over the years. Cosby responded to the tweet saying Thank you @iamstephaniemills your voice has always been powerful!”
