Vanessa Bryant’s world stopped on January 26 when her husband and legendary NBA player Kobe Bryant unexpectedly tragically passed away in a helicopter crash, alongside daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant and others. Now it seems she has more to add to her worries and grief, as her mother’s full interview with Univision has aired today.
We reported earlier on the unfortunate passing, as well as the clip of the interview that was posted of the weekend. Prior to the death of the Laker star, Vanessa and mother, Sofia Laine, were seemingly extremely close. Kobe’s mother in law would frequently be seen on both Kobe as well as daughter Vanessa’s Instagram pages, including a post on Thanksgiving of 2019 where Laine was seen having dinner with the couple and their children.
Sources reported to US Weekly that Bryant heavily leaned and depended on her mother for support after her husband’s death. The source said, “Vanessa is incredibly close to her mom and her mom has been her rock throughout the past few weeks.” They continued on to say Laine was “always with her and the girls… and she’s been keeping Vanessa strong and she’s the weight of her support system,” as she took solace in her mother and sister’s support, as they were “committed to seeing her through this. But at the end of the day, there aren’t words to describe her feelings.”
The mother and daughter’s history is the reason that fans are a bit taken aback by this recent interview. A clip of the upsetting interview that aired on Univision’s “El Gordo Y La Flaca” today, surfaced on Friday, where it was revealed Laine said that Bryant kicked her out of the house and demanded that she return the car that was given to her. “I need you out of the house,” Laine alleges Bryant told her while shedding tears. Continuing on about the alleged betrayal, she said “She wanted her car, and she wanted it now.”
When the clip surfaced, no word from Vanessa was given about the situation, however, that didn’t stop fans from offering their two cents. “Any parent that takes advantage of your pain to trash you in ANY interview for public gain is a sh**ty parent,” writes one Twitter user. ”I don’t care what the accusations are, it shows exactly why you got kicked to the curb to start with. This applies to Vanessa Bryant’s mom.”
With the full interview finally airing, Bryant has broken her silence. In a statement that was shown at the end of the interview, the widow states “My husband and daughter passed away unexpectedly, and yet my mother had the audacity to do a television interview speaking negatively of me while shedding tears for a car and a house that were not in her name. She has removed all her diamond jewelry, emptied the apartment I provided, and put away the furniture to make it look like she doesn’t have my support. My husband and I have supported her financially for the past 20 years, and continue to do so, in addition to her monthly alimony.”
Bryant continues, explaining that “contrary to previous reports, she has not been physically present or emotionally supportive of my daughters and me after my husband and daughter passed away.” She concludes her statement saying that she now sees what “is most important to my mother and it’s more than painful. I hope that everything that is coming out about our personal relationships ends here.”
